Specifically, from the female cochineal beetles and their eggs. And it's not just yogurt. The bugs are also used to give red coloring to Hershey Good & Plenty candies, Tropicana grapefruit juice, and other common foods.

What Companies Do to Improve the Look & Taste of Your Food?

You won't find "crushed bugs" on the list of ingredients for any of these foods, however. Companies have a bit of latitude in describing exactly what they put in our food. Many larger companies, such as General Mills, the manufacturer of Yoplait and Pepsi, the maker of Tropicana, identify the dye in their products as either carmine, or cochineal extract. Still, many companies simply list "artificial color" on their ingredients list without giving any details.

Food activists are trying to change disclosure requirements. The Food & Drug Administration has received numerous complaints over the issue and is now in the process of considering a proposal to require color additives like the cochineal extract to be disclosed on the labels of all foods that use them. "Hopefully we'll see something by the end of the year," says Michael Jacobson, executive director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a food advocacy group in Washington, D. C.

Jacobson says that consumers want to know what they're eating. Some are allergic to bug extract; others are vegetarians. "The food product should indicate that it comes from insects so that vegetarians at least can avoid the product," he says.

Who Is Shaheed Harpreet Kaur

By mid-1992, the Indian Police in Punjab had lost all sense of morality and considered human rights to be a joke. On June 25, 1992, 15-year-old Harpreet Kaur RaNo was stopped while riding her bicycle in Amritsar’s Ghio Mandi.

Harpreet Kaur was very interested in the Sikh struggle and used to consider the Sikh fighters her brothers. When the newspaper would print a notice about the Shahidi and bhog of a Sikh fighter, she would cut out their picture and keep it in her purse.

The police decided to search her purse. When the pictures were found, the excuse to arrest this young Sikh girl was found and she was taken directly to the famous torture center at BR Model School in Amritsar. She was put in the custody of Thanedar Darshan Lal who punished Harpreet Kaur for her “crime”. In that dark torture center, only Vahiguru knows what suffering and brutality Harpreet Kaur faced.

Despite her family’s best efforts to free her, the newspapers reported that Harpreet Kaur along with 3 other “terrorists” had been killed on June 27, 1992 near Sultanvind. Her body was not given to the family. The family went to the cremation grounds at Durgiana Mandir and in one pile of ashes, Harpreet Kaur’s sister recognized a kaRa. The two sisters used to wear identical KaRas and the ashes were recognized as Harpreet Kaur’s. No justice was ever expected or delivered for this cold-blooded murder.

We have to look at how and what they do, in order to keep the khalsa roots strong in the way they have kept theirs.

Bhai Sahib was born in the year of 1965 to mata Sharanjeet Kaur and Amrik Singh in the city of Jalandhar. After receiving his elementary education Bhai Sahib went on to higher studies at Ramgharia College and Sukhchain-Anah College in Phagwara. Since college, Bhai Raminderjeet Singh followed the ideology of the freedom fighters. During this time, Bhai Sahib came to have great love for Sikh freedom fighters such as Martyr Bhai Paramjeet Singh ‘Gandasa’ (prime accused in the incident against Shiv Sena President Rama Kant Jalota). In 1984 after Operation Blue Star Raminderjeet Singh was arrested by the police and sent to Jalandhar Jail where the Punjab Police severely tortured him and several false cases were put on him. After putting many more cases on Bhai Sahib, the Police sent him to Nabha Security Jail where he was locked up for 2 years. On being released from jail, Bhai Sahib went home but was unable to stay there as he would keep thinking about the chardi kala of the Khalsa Panth to which his soul was attached. In the city of Jalandhar, in 1987, Bhai Sahib killed a ‘Police Cat’ (Government sponsored informants/paramilitaries who were responsible for the death of many innocents and freedom fighters). Upon completing this task, Raminderjeet Singh began bringing to justice those enemies of the Sikh Nation who were hell bent on finishing off the Sikhs. By this time, Bhai Sahib had met many famous personalities in the Sikh freedom movement such as Bhai Avtar Singh Babbar Pehlvaan, Bhai Manjeet Singh Babbar and many other eminent freedom fighters of the Babbar Khalsa organization. After some time the Jalandhar Police with a tip-off from a police informant arrested Bhai Sahib again. Once again, the Punjab Police showed their true character by ruthlessly torturing Bhai Sahib Ji, but he took all the police torture on his body with a calm and peaceful mind. Subsequently many cases were put on against Bhai Raminderjeet Singh Ji and he was locked up in Nabha Jail. It is here that he met Bhai Harmeet Singh Babbar Paouval, Bhai Charanjeet Singh Chana Babbar and other freedom fighters. Bhai Raminderjeet Singh Babbar and Bhai Harmeet Singh Babbar became very close to one another, their respect for one another was even greater than that of brothers, which also lasted until their last breaths.

In 1989, after spending quite some time in jail, Bhai Sahib came home but spent very little time there. He left home and never turned his back at doing seva for the Khalsa Panth. During the month of July, in the year 1990, Bhai Sahib’s father was attacked by a group of ‘police cats’, during this attack his father was gravely wounded. Accepting this challenge by the Indian security forces Raminderjeet Singh Babbar went after these ‘black cats’ who were operating under the name of ‘Indian Lions’. One by one, the true lion - Raminderjeet Singh Babbar, finished off all of these phony lions. Seeing the immense seva that Bhai Sahib was doing for the Khalsa Panth, the head sevadaar of Babbar Khalsa International Bhai Sahib Sukhdev Singh Ji Babbar appointed Raminderjeet Singh Babbar as the chief sevadaar of the Jalandhar area. Some time later Bhai Sahib Ji made the Ropar area the center of his Panthic actions. Raminderjeet Singh Babbar along with Bhai Harmeet Singh Babbar Paouval, Bhai Balvinder Singh Babbar Jatana, Bhai Charanjeet Singh Babbar, and many other freedom fighters from the Babbar Khalsa organization began eliminating the enemies of the Khalsa Panth in the Malwa region and outside of Punjab.

On the evening of February 28, 1991, Bhai Nirmal Singh Babbar Gegaymajra, Bhai Harpal Singh Babbar and Bhai Raminderjeet Singh Taini were traveling in a Maruti van near Chandigarh when the Punjab Police due to a tip off from a police informant surrounded them. Bhai Nirmal Singh Babbar became a martyr at that moment when he swallowed a cyanide capsule but the Chandigarh Police took Ramniderjeet Singh and Harpal Singh into their custody. While locked up, Bhai Sahib was ruthlessly tortured by the S.S.P. Sumedh Saini and other heartless officers under his command. Sumedh Saini heated up iron rods until they were glowing red and used them to burn Raminderjeet Singh Babbar. Bhai Sahib had burns all over his body. Even with such a ruthless method of torture being carried out on Bhai Sahib, the police interrogators were not even able to get his real name from him. After hearing of Bhai Sahib’s arrest, the freedom fighters that were close to him kidnapped the relatives of Ludhiana’s Chief Minister Boota Sioh. This forced the police to publicly admit that they had arrested Bhai Raminderjeet Singh as otherwise the police would have killed Bhai Sahib in a false encounter. When the police admitted Bhai Sahib’s arrest, the freedom fighters released the relatives of the Chief Minister. Police Chiefs from both Jalandhar and Ludhiana came to Chandigarh so that they could torture Bhai Sahib and get some information out of him. The S.S.P. of Jalandhar devised a scheme to kill Raminderjeet Singh. He wanted to take Bhai Sahib to Jalandhar and kill him in a false encounter along the way. The Jalandhar S.S.P. wanted to carry out this plan as Raminderjeet Singh Babbar had eliminated an entire group of his ‘police cats’. Fortunately, the S.S.P. was unable to get permission from the Chandigarh Police to transfer Bhai Sahib to Jalandhar so he was unable to carry out his evil plans. Seeing all these schemes to get him eliminated, Bhai Sahib began making a scheme of his own, which was to escape from jail.

On February 25, 1992, Bhai Sahib was being transported by the police to the P.G.I. for a medical checkup. Carrying out the action that was preplanned by Bhai Sahib and his fellow freedom fighters of Babbar Khalsa, the freedom fighters attacked the police group escorting Raminderjeet Singh Babbar and freed him. During this daring escape a police Sub Inspector was killed and several police officers were wounded. Upon being freed from jail, Bhai Sahib once again began fighting for the freedom of the Sikh Nation. The Punjab government was now offering a reward of 15 lakh for information leading to the arrest or death of Raminderjeet Singh Babbar.

Subsequently, Bhai Sahib was married to Bibi Manjeet Kaur of Gango Radhram village. Bibi Manjeet Kaur was a true Gursikh bibi and had a very firm belief in Gurbani. Bhai Harmeet Singh Paouval Babbar performed the Anand Karaj of Bhai Raminderjeet Singh Babbar and Bibi Manjit Kaur. Even after marriage, there was no change or slow down in Bhai Sahib’s actions and determination to gain freedom for the Khalsa Panth. Bibi Manjeet Kaur began playing an equal part in the liberation movement for the Khalsa Panth, she along with her husband took part in many actions carried out by the Babbar Khalsa freedom fighters.

In the Khalsa Panth, many great warriors have taken birth but unfortunately many traitors have as well. On March 5, 1993, such a traitor informed the police of the whereabouts of Bhai Raminderjeet Singh Babbar. Bhai Sahib and his Singhni were traveling by bus to Anandpur Sahib when near Khanna, the bus was stopped. The S.S.P. of Khanna had stopped and surrounded the bus with a large police force that Bhai Sahib and his wife Bibi Manjeet Kaur were traveling on. An ASI officer got on the bus and then grabbed Bhai Taini by the wrist. At this, Bibi Manjit Kaur took her pistol out of her purse and pumped three bullets into the ASI’s head. The police asked Bhai Sahib to step out of the bus, but Bhai Sahib had made up his mind to take on the police force and asked the passengers to get off the bus.

After the passengers had gotten off the bus, Babbar Raminderjeet Singh began the battle with the police force as he opened fire on them with his AK-47 assault rifle. In complete support of her husband, Bibi Manjeet Kaur also entered the battle and began firing on the police force. During this battle Raminderjeet Singh Babbar and his Singhnee Bibi Manjeet Kaur showed unparalleled bravery, together they showed the police and onlookers how an actual encounter takes place between the oppressive government and the brave Khalsa of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. On taking heavy losses, the police began firing very heavily on the bus from which the brave lion and lioness were fighting. Even though they were outnumbered and taking heavy gunfire from the police, Bhai Sahib and Bibi Ji stayed steadfast in the battle. Eventually, faced with such an overwhelming force, their guns fell silent. This brave Babbar along with his Singhnee have gone to Guru Sahib’s Charan and left us. Since Bhai Sahib’s younger brother and father were locked up in jail, his mother alone performed her son’s and daughter in-law’s ‘antim sanskar’ in the presence of the Khanna Police. The Khalsa Panth will forever have the greatest respect for such martyrs.

Bomb plot' man makes court appearance

A man appeared in court today accused of preparing for a terrorist bomb attack. Hassan Muhammed Sabri Al Tabbakh, 38, is accused of compiling a document with instructions on how to make a bomb. The Old Bailey heard that Al Tabbakh, of Camelot Way, Small Heath, Birmingham, is also accused of stockpiling chemicals for the device. Mr Justice Calvert-Smith adjourned the case for a plea and case management hearing on May 16.

He said any trial may be transferred to the Midlands, possibly to be held at Birmingham Crown Court. Al Tabbakh, who is of Syrian origin, appeared in court via video link. He spoke only to confirm his name.

He was arrested by counter-terrorism police near his home in Birmingham in December. He was later charged under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

It is alleged that he compiled and retained a document with instructions for making and detonating a bomb and obtained chemicals for the device.

There was no application for bail.

Mukatsar: The situation went out of control in the Maghi Nagar keertan organized by the SGPC here today when the DSP Mukatsar Baljit Singh Sandhu along with his police party pounced upon the float by the Bhujhang Khalsa International. Bhujhang Khalsa International float was decorated with the pictures and huge hoardings of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale. The police searched the float thoroughly. When they could not find anything during the search, they took away two kirpans belonging to singhs in the float. The police seperated the float from the nagar keertan and took it to the police station Mukatsar and arrested Maninder Singh, the president of Bhujhang khalsa international who was present on the float.A large number of youth lead by Ranjeet Singh Jeeta, spokesperson of Bhujhang Khalsa International assembled in front of the police station in protest against this police action. In view of the protest, the police released Maninder Singh after a while.

Brussels , Belgium (KP) - Bhai Jagwinder Singh a Sikh activist who was involved in the Julio Ribiero case in Romania was assassinated under mysterious circumstances on the night of April 17th 2006. According to witnesses, a lone masked gunman entered the STD business of Bhai Jagwinder Singh, as he was conversing on the telephone and preparing to close for the day. The assassin fired two shots into the head of Jagwinder Singh and promptly fled the scene. Jagwinder Singh succumbed to the gunshot wounds instantaneously. The customer who witnessed this incident narrated the shocking events to the local police. However, what is interesting is that the police are calling this assassination a robbery even though nothing was stolen from Bhai Jagwinder Singh or from his business.

For many, including the police, this murder may seem like a normal everyday crime but to see the reality one would need to look deeper into these events and know the history of Bhai Jagwinder Singh. Bhai Sahib was not just an owner of a STD business and the father of a three year old girl and one year old boy, he was in fact a freedom fighter of the Sikh independence movement.

Background

Bhai Jagwinder Singh hailed from a village in the Ludhiana district by name of Rakba, which is close to Malapur. Bhai Sahib rose to prominence when he along with his associates had tracked down the former head of Punjab Police Julio Ribiero. Ribiero and the forces under his command during his tenure as head of the Punjab Police are alleged to have committed horrendous acts of violence, abuse of human rights, torture, and the 'disappearance' of thousands of innocent Sikh youths all across the Punjab.

Julio Ribiero, after serving as head of the Punjab Police was appointed as the Indian ambassador in the country of Romania. On the evening of August 30th 1991, Bhai Jagwinder Singh along with his companions carried out an assassination attempt against Ribiero. This attempt failed, however Ribiero was left in a gravely wounded state. Bhai Jagwinder Singh was also seriously wounded in this endeavor, receiving eight gunshot wounds.

One companion of Bhai Sahib by the name of Bhai Jugraj Singh attained martyrdom during this encounter while the security forces apprehended the third companion Bhai Pargat Singh. Subsequently, Bhai Jagwinder Singh and Bhai Pargat Singh were awarded life sentences for their role in the attempted assassination of Ribiero. In the year of 1998 they were both released from prison due to good behavior. After being released from jail, Pargat Singh settled in Greece while Jagwinder Singh settled in Belgium.

Previous Attempts

Interestingly this was not the first attempt on the life of Bhai Jagwinder Singh. In fact, it is alleged that there has been at least two other attempts on his life that have been narrated by his friends, family members, and acquaintances. One incident is that of men in a police vehicle watching his home and following him whenever he left his home. When this came to the attention of Bhai Sahib, he instructed his taxi driver to drive to the nearest police station. As Bhai Sahib's taxi entered the police station, the police vehicle that was following him for quite some time turned around and went in the opposite direction. Bhai Jagwinder Singh proceeded to ask the police officials whether they had a police car with the number that the car following him displayed. The police responded that they did not have any such vehicle with that number in their fleet. Bhai Sahib was convinced that those following him were out to take his life.

Being concerned that there was an organized effort to finish him, Bhai Sahib began making arrangements to leave Belgium. Through a travel agent Bhai Sahib was preparing to find the legal means of leaving the country. The travel agent would always find some excuse to give Bhai Sahib whenever he called.

One day unexpectedly, Bhai Sahib received a call from the travel agent instructing him to immediately come to a small airport in a different town as his paperwork to leave the country for another place had been completed. Bhai Sahib left for the airport along with a non-Sikh friend. In route to the airport it crossed Bhai Sahib's mind that there were no outbound international flights from such a small airport. Bhai Sahib became suspicious that this was yet another scheme in the process of taking his life, but decided to go on ahead and find out for himself.

Bhai Sahib was told that a certain individual would receive him at the airport. Upon reaching the airport Bhai Sahib's non-Sikh friend ran into the man who was going to receive Bhai Sahib. It turned out that his friend and the receiver had known each other in the past. Bhai Sahib's friend upon questioning the receiver came to know that he was there to eliminate Bhai Sahib and had received the amount of $50,000 from an official of a certain country.

After they parted ways, Bhai Sahib met the man who was there to receive him. There he began questioning Bhai Sahib whether or not he had all his paperwork in his bag and what else that bag contained. Bhai Sahib was one step ahead of those who were out to get him, and told the man that his bag also contained weapons. As they parted Bhai Sahib and his friend returned to the car instead of fully entering the airport, which they then noticed that yet again they were being followed by a car. As they came to an isolated section of the town, the occupants of the pursuing car opened fire on Bhai Sahib's vehicle. With Akal Purakh's kirpa, Bhai Sahib was not hurt or injured in the firing and the other car sped off.

Although previous attempts suspected to be the handywork of a certain government agency failed, unfortunately they finally managed to take the life of this great individual. They have just added one more name to the long list of Sikh freedom fighters that continues to grow and as a result bringing the Khalsa Panth towards its righteous goal of self-determination.

CBI declines to record statement by Tytler Witness

New Delhi (KP) – Fully committed to closing the case against Jagdish Tytler, the CBI has declined to record the statement by Jasbir Singh via video conference. Jasbir Singh, an NRI based in California, opted to appear at any US Court to testify in the case against Tytler as a key eye-witness, most likely for his own safety.

After receiving a notice from the Delhi High Court to contact Jasbir Singh regarding his testimony, the CBI has filed a response alleging that to record Jasbir Singh overseas through video conferencing would be a difficult task. The CBI has also alleged that it would not be able to verify the identity of Jasbir Singh unless he appeared himself in front of the court here. Earlier, the CBI had closed the case against Jagdish Tytler declaring an absence of eye-witnesses.

Although Jasbir Singh had previously appeared in front of the Nanavati Commission, the CBI had declared him as untraceable. Later, Jasbir Singh, while staying in California, contacted several TV stations and newspapers and alleged that he had personally heard Jagdish Tytler encouraging the mobs against the Sikhs during the November 1984 riots.

Jasbir Singh has sent several emails to the CBI offering his cooperation in the case against Jagdish Tytler while staying in the US. According to the Code of Criminal Procedures Section 166A (1), non-resident Indians are allowed to testify in foreign courts. Nonetheless, the CBI has continued to demand Jasbir Singh's presence in the court case.

Navkiran Singh, Jasbir Singh's council from Chandigarh , has alleged his client is not in a position to return to India as he faces a threat to his life. Family members of Jasbir Singh in New Delhi have been continuously facing death threats on the phone. Navkiran Singh told the press that the CBI must provide provisions to Jasbir Singh and record his testimony through video conferencing.
