Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji's Bani

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: Shalok, Ninth Mehl:

If you do not sing the Praises of the Lord, your life is rendered useless. Says Nanak, meditate, vibrate upon the Lord; immerse your mind in Him, like the fish in the water. ||1||

Why are you engrossed in sin and corruption? You are not detached, even for a moment! Says Nanak, meditate, vibrate upon the Lord, and you shall not be caught in the noose of death. ||2||

Your youth has passed away like this, and old age has overtaken your body.Says Nanak, meditate, vibrate upon the Lord; your life is fleeting away! ||3||

You have become old, and you do not understand that death is overtaking you.Says Nanak, you are insane! Why do you not remember and meditate on God? ||4||

Your wealth, spouse, and all the possessions which you claim as your own none of these shall go along with you in the end. O Nanak, know this as true. ||5||

He is the Saving Grace of sinners, the Destroyer of fear, the Master of the masterless. Says Nanak, realize and know Him, who is always with you. ||6||

He has given you your body and wealth, but you are not in love with Him. Says Nanak, you are insane! Why do you now shake and tremble so helplessly? ||7||

He has given you your body, wealth, property, peace and beautiful mansions. Says Nanak, listen, mind: why don't you remember the Lord in meditation? ||8||

The Lord is the Giver of all peace and comfort. There is no other at all. Says Nanak, listen, mind: meditating in remembrance on Him, salvation is attained. ||9||

Remembering Him in meditation, salvation is attained; vibrate and meditate on Him, O my friend. Says Nanak, listen, mind: your life is passing away! ||10||

Your body is made up of the five elements; you are clever and wise - know this well. Believe it - you shall merge once again into the One, O Nanak, from whom you originated. ||11||

The Dear Lord abides in each and every heart; the Saints proclaim this as true. Says Nanak, meditate and vibrate upon Him, and you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12||

One who is not touched by pleasure or pain, greed, emotional attachment and egotistical pride says Nanak, listen, mind: he is the very image of God. ||13||

One who is beyond praise and slander, who looks upon gold and iron alike says Nanak, listen, mind: know that such a person is liberated. ||14||

One who is not affected by pleasure or pain, who looks upon friend and enemy alike says Nanak, listen, mind: know that such a person is liberated. ||15||

One who does not frighten anyone, and who is not afraid of anyone else says Nanak, listen, mind: call him spiritually wise. ||16||

One who has forsaken all sin and corruption, who wears the robes of neutral detachment says Nanak, listen, mind: good destiny is written on his forehead. ||17||

One who renounces Maya and possessiveness and is detached from everything says Nanak, listen, mind: God abides in his heart. ||18||

That mortal, who forsakes egotism, and realizes the Creator Lord says Nanak, that person is liberated; O mind, know this as true. ||19||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is the Destroyer of fear, the Eradicator of evil-mindedness. Night and day, O Nanak, whoever vibrates and meditates on the Lord's Name, sees all of his works brought to fruition. ||20||
Vibrate with your tongue the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe; with your ears, hear the Lord's Name. Says Nanak, listen, man: you shall not have to go to the house of Death. ||21||

That mortal who renounces possessiveness, greed, emotional attachment and egotism says Nanak, he himself is saved, and he saves many others as well. ||22||

Like a dream and a show, so is this world, you must know.None of this is true, O Nanak, without God. ||23||

Night and day, for the sake of Maya, the mortal wanders constantly. Among millions, O Nanak, there is
scarcely anyone, who keeps the Lord in his consciousness. ||24||

As the bubbles in the water well up and disappear again, so is the universe created; says Nanak, listen, O my friend! ||25||

The mortal does not remember the Lord, even for a moment; he is blinded by the wine of Maya. Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, he is caught by the noose of Death. ||26||
I
f you yearn for eternal peace, then seek the Sanctuary of the Lord. Says Nanak, listen, mind: this human body is difficult to obtain. ||27||

For the sake of Maya, the fools and ignorant people run all around. Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, life passes away uselessly. ||28||

That mortal who meditates and vibrates upon the Lord night and day - know him to be the embodiment of the Lord. There is no difference between the Lord and the humble servant of the Lord; O Nanak, know this as true. ||29||

The mortal is entangled in Maya; he has forgotten the Name of the Lord of the Universe. Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, what is the use of this human life? ||30||

The mortal does not think of the Lord; he is blinded by the wine of Maya. Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, he is caught in the noose of Death. ||31||

In good times, there are many companions around, but in bad times, there is no one at all. Says Nanak, vibrate, and meditate on the Lord; He shall be your only Help and Support in the end. ||32||

Mortals wander lost and confused through countless lifetimes; their fear of death is never removed. Says Nanak, vibrate and meditate on the Lord, and you shall dwell in the Fearless Lord. ||33||

I have tried so many things, but the pride of my mind has not been dispelled. I am engrossed in evil-mindedness, Nanak. O God, please save me! ||34||
Childhood, youth and old age - know these as the three stages of life. Says Nanak, without meditating on the

Lord, everything is useless; you must appreciate this. ||35||

You have not done what you should have done; you are entangled in the web of greed. Nanak, your time is past and gone; why are you crying now, you blind fool? ||36||

The mind is absorbed in Maya - it cannot escape it, my friend. Nanak, it is like a picture painted on the wall - it cannot leave it. ||37||

The man wishes for something, but something different happens. He plots to deceive others, O Nanak, but he places the noose around his own neck instead. ||38||

People make all sorts of efforts to find peace and pleasure, but no one tries to earn pain. Says Nanak, listen, mind: whatever pleases God comes to pass. ||39||
The world wanders around begging, but the Lord is the Giver of all. Says Nanak, meditate in remembrance on
him, and all your works will be successful. ||40||

Why do you take such false pride in yourself? You must know that the world is just a dream. None of this is yours; Nanak proclaims this truth. ||41||

You are so proud of your body; it shall perish in an instant, my friend. That mortal who chants the Praises of the Lord, O Nanak, conquers the world. ||42||

That person, who meditates in remembrance on the Lord in his heart, is liberated - know this well. There is no difference between that person and the Lord: O Nanak, accept this as the Truth. ||43||

That person, who does not feel devotion to God in his mind O Nanak, know that his body is like that of a pig, or a dog. ||44||

A dog never abandons the home of his master. O Nanak, in just the same way, vibrate, and meditate on the Lord, single-mindedly, with one-pointed consciousness. ||45||

Those who make pilgrimages to sacred shrines, observe ritualistic fasts and make donations to charity while still taking pride in their minds O Nanak, their actions are useless, like the elephant, who takes a bath, and then rolls in the dust. ||46||

The head shakes, the feet stagger, and the eyes become dull and weak. Says Nanak, this is your condition. And even now, you have not savored the sublime essence of the Lord. ||47||

I had looked upon the world as my own, but no one belongs to anyone else. O Nanak, only devotional worship of the Lord is permanent; enshrine this in your mind. ||48||

The world and its affairs are totally false; know this well, my friend. Says Nanak, it is like a wall of sand; it shall not endure. ||49||

Raam Chand passed away, as did Raawan, even though he had lots of relatives. Says Nanak, nothing lasts forever; the world is like a dream. ||50||

People become anxious, when something unexpected happens. This is the way of the world, O Nanak; nothing is stable or permanent. ||51||

Whatever has been created shall be destroyed; everyone shall perish, today or tomorrow. O Nanak, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and give up all other entanglements. ||52||

Animal Sacrifice in Sikhi?

Some so called Sikhs; sacrifice a goat in the name of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. They put the blood on their foreheads as tilaks. The meat is cooked and given out as Prasad; known as mahaprasad. This is done on special occasions; and is a very common practice in India. But it is totally Anti-Gurmat; Sikhi teaches kindness, compassion, humility, truth, righteousness and love. The slaughtering of animals is totally against Sikh principles. The so called Sikhs that do this are tapped in the head to sacrifice an animal in the name of the Guru. Why associate Sikhi and the Guru’s name with such cruel activities; it is so wrong to do so.

What logic and purpose lies in sacrificing an animal?

What is so religious and pure about it?

The goblins/barbarians that want to eat those carcasses of flesh just want to do so for taste and try and make it legitimate in their peanut sized brains by saying it is apart of Sikhi.

Gurmat:

Kabeer, they oppress living beings and kill them, and call it proper. When the Lord calls for their account, what will their condition be? Kabeer, it is tyranny to use force; the Lord shall call you to account. When your account is called for, your face and mouth shall be beaten. Kabeer, it is easy to render your account, if your heart is pure. In the True Court of the Lord, no one will seize you. –Ang 1375 - Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Kabeer, to use force is tyranny, even if you call it legal. When your account is called for in the Court of the Lord, what will your condition be then? Kabeer, the dinner of beans and rice is excellent, if it is flavored with salt. Who would cut his throat, to have meat with his bread? -Ang 1374 - Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Shaheedi

Shaheedi means when a Sikh or a person sacrifices their life for a just and noble cause. It is an act of heroism for the betterment of humanity and one may die fighting for the righteous principles he/she stands for. Bhai Gurdas ji was a close Sikh o Sri Guru Arjan dev Ji, he describes a shaheed (martyr) as a person who has faith and love in the one lord and his creation, but also a person who has valour, fortitude and fearlessness.

Sikhs cherish their shaheeds that gave their lives to uphold the rights of Sikh people as well as general human rights for non-Sikhs. A shaheed has no discrimination; as long as the cause is just the Sikh will take a stand to overcome oppression. Sikhs remember the shaheeds in the Ardas-which is repeated daily by practicing Sikhs. We ask Guru Ji to give as the strength which the shaheeds had. So that when the time comes like past shaheeds we too can resist oppression, even if it means death.

Sikh Gurus not only commanded the Sikhs to make all types of sacrifices for the common welfare of the people. The Gurus made al types of sacrifices for humanity even giving their lives to their cause. A Sikh is to give a tenth of their earnings for a noble-charitable cause. The Langer (free food) for the whole community is just one of the ways in which Sikhs help others (langar is available at every Sikh temple and is open to everybody). Sikhs have carried out immense acts of courage, bravery and died on the battle field against evil-doers. The bhakti (Sikh prayers) give the Sikh a strong spirit which allows them to endure torture, imprisonment and even death, but the Sikh will not alter from the path of righteousness. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Sri Guru Teg bahadur Ji both laid down their lives for noble causes. These sacrifices gave every Sikh; the desire to follow in the same path of their Guru. Sri Guru Gobind singh ji sent his sons out on the battlefield to fight against the evil-doers.

Death is not an evil; there is a kind of dying which gives permanent life devoid of any pain. For those who fight against tyranny for a noble cause without forgetting the lord, death cannot have any terror for them and their death is approved by god” Sri guru granth sahib Ji.

In sikhi holy war means, a battle between good and evil forces, i.e., the Good stand up for justice, truth, humanity and the evil stand up for crime, cruelty and commit inhumane unjust acts.

“Blessed is the person whose tongue chants the lord’s name and whose mind contemplates holy war” Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

After the Shaheedi of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, his son Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji started the “Dharam yudh” a war to defend truth and justice. The Khalsa army was created, the soldiers are known as God’s warriors, they seek the protection of God and fight for god’s victory. They used the sword when needed; in sikhi the sword represents Gods glory (resistance against evil) as a form of protection for the saints, weak and oppressed.

The True Guru of the SIKHZ!

The Light of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was passed on to Guru Angad Dev Ji; like a candle which lights another candle. This happened until the everlasting Guru; Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

In 1708 AD at Sri Hazoor Sahib, Nanded with 5 Singhs in the Hazoori (Presence) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee uttered the following in front of all those present as a command:

Dohra “Agya bhai akal ki tabhi chalayo panth

Sab Sikhan ko hukam hai Guru manyo granth

Guru granth ji manyo pragat guran ki deh

Jo prabh ko millbo chahe khoj shabad meylay

Raj karaga khalsa aqi rahei na koe

Khwar hoe sabh mélange bache saran jo hoeey”

“With the blessing of God the Khalsa Panth was created, all Sikhs have a commandment to believe in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee, which is the living embodiment of the 10 Guru’s. If you desire to meet God Worship the Shabad (Verses) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee.”

The names of the 5 Singh’s were:

1) Baba Gurbaksh Singh Jee, who was martyred fighting against Ahmed Shah Abdali’s forces, his place of martyrdom was behind Sri Akhal Takhat Sahib.
2) Baba Deep Singh Jee Shaheed
3) Pyare Bhai Dharam Singh Jee
4) Bhai Santokh Singh Jee (Sevadar Sri Hazoor Sahib)
5) Bhai Heer Singh Jee (author of Guru Jee’s daily diary)

This is what happened there is not no arguing this, other fakesters just chat waffle because they want the Gurship.

"As the Lord's word comes to me, Lalo, so I deliver it." (Ang 722, SGGSJ)

"The Divine Word is the Guru, and my mind in reflective meditation, the disciple" (Ang 943, SGGSJ).

"The profound and unfathomable 'Shabad' is his Guru and spiritual guide. Without the 'Shabad' the world is gone mad." (Ang 635, SGGS)

'Baani', the Word of God, is the Guru, the Guru is Baani, in 'Baani' is Amrit, the nectar of life." (Ang 982, SGGS)

I myself know not what to say; all I speak is what the Lord commands. (Ang 763, SGGS)

"The Divine Scripture (Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji) is the meeting place where one can meet the Transcendent Lord God." (Ang 1226, SGGS)

Dont believe the waffle going on out here!

Example of some wafflers!

This joker who looks like Ghandi with a beard claims to be the Sikh Guru. Where were you in 84 muppet. Go back and play with your barbies.

This fatso claims the same thing, He looks like a Little fat Battyman! Some one tell him to shut up and go back to his gay partner.

The meaning of the Ardass

Ardass-Supplication (Means Earnest prayer)

A devout Sikh performs the ardass at least twice. The Ardass is also performed at the start of important tasks. In order to receive Gods blessing; Ardass is to be performed standing with palms together (Showing humility).

Below is an English translation of a very brief Ardass:

God is one, all victory is of God.

May the respected sword, god in the form of destroyer of evil-doers help us, recited by the tenth Guru!

First remember the sword, then remember and Guru Nanak, then remember Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das and Guru Ram Das, may they help us!

Remember Guru Arjan, Guru Hargobind and respected Gur Har Ria! Remember Guru Har krishan, by having the sight of, all pains vanish. Remember Guru Teg Bahadur, and then the nine sources of wealth will come hastening to your home!

Oh respected Gurus please help us everywhere, May the kind respect tenth Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji assist us everywhere!

Think and meditate upon the divine light of the ten Kings contained in the respected Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and turn your thoughts to the divine teachings and get pleasure by the sight of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji! Utter Waheguru.

Think and remember the deeds of the five beloved ones, of the four sons of Sri Gobind Singh Ji, of the forty Martyrs (redeemed ones), of the brave Sikhs of indomitable determination, of the devotees steeped in the colour of the naam, of those absorbed in the naam, of those who remembered the naam and shared their food in companionship, of those who started free kitchens, of those who wielded their swords for truth and justice, of those who overlooked others short-comings, and all the pure and truly devoted ones! Utter Waheguru.

Think of remember the service of the brave Sikhs, who sacrificed their heads but did not surrender their Sikhi, who got themselves cut to pieces from the joints of their body, who got their scalps removed, who were tied and rotated on the spiked wheels and were crashed to pieces, who were cut by saws, who were flayed alive, who sacrificed themselves to upkeep the dignity of the gurdwaras, and who did not abandon their sikhi, who kept their hair until their last breath! Utter Waheguru

Turn your thoughts to the five seats of the Sikh religion and all other Gurdwaras, Utter Waheguru First the entire respected khalsa make this supplication that may they meditate on your name, may all pleasures and comfort comes through such mediation, where-ever respected Khalsa is present, give your protection and grace, may the free kitchen and sword never fail, maintain the honour of your devotees, confer victory on the panth, may the respected sword come to our assistance, may the khalsa always get honours, Utter Waheguru! Kindly confer upon the Sikhs the gift of Sikhi, the gift of long hair, the gift of observing Sikh laws, the gift of divine knowledge, the gift of firm faith, the gift of belief and the biggest gift of naam and of having bath in the respected tank of nectar, O God! May the choirs, mansions and the banners exist forever, May the truth forever triumph, utter Waheguru!

May the minds of all the Sikhs remain Humble and their wisdom exalted, O God! You are the protector of wisdom, O immortal God the constant helper of his Sikhs, kindly confer the gift of visiting, maintaining, controlling and worshipping without any restrictions, the Gurdwara of Nankana sahib Ji and other Gurdwaras which the Khalsa has been deprived of. O true Father Waheguru, you are the shelter of the shelter- less, the honour of the meek, the power of the helpless ones, we humbly make a prayer in your presence.

Kindly pardon our errors and shortcomings, kindly fulfil the objectives of all, kindly cause us to meet the true devotees, by meeting whom , we remember your name, o God threw Guru Nanak may your name be exalted and may all prosper according to your will. The Khalsa belongs to God, the Victory is Gods.

The Ardas is very Panthic; even though most Sikhs read it everyday they don't seem to have a Panthic bone in their body. I think we overlook the meaning of the Arads and just seem to be lip reading such a powerful prayer!

Intoxication Issue!

Intoxication-What does Guru Ji say?

Commandments, from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Kabeer, those mortals who consume marijuana (intoxicants for pleasure), fish (meat) and wine (alcohol), no matter what pilgrimages, fasts and rituals they follow they will go to hell. Ang- 1377

The Fear of You, O Lord God, is my marijuana; my consciousness is the pouch which holds it. Ang- 721

One person brings a full bottle, and another fills the cups. Drinking the alcohol, their intelligence departs, and madness enters their mind. Ang-554

Drinking in this wine one takes on countless sins and corruptions. Ang-553

A true Sikh is intoxicated by the power of Gurbani, naam simran and seva. A Gursikh is buzzing from the love of the Lord. A true Sikh refrains from drugs, alcohol and other nasty worldly intoxications. Some misguided Sikhs say there is no harm done in taking shaheedi deg-Bhang (traditional medicine containing cannabis) regularly. This medical drink was used by Sikh warriors to help treat their wounds suffered in battles (as it acted as a pain killer). That is the only reason it was used, therefore taking it regularly is more of a druggie thing than medication. Medication and intoxication are two different motives, so satsangat don’t get misguided and refrain from taking all intoxications other than Gurbani. Yeah if I was to get shot and survive they might have used heroin as a pain killer to operate on me and give me some drugs to help me recover, this doesn’t mean I am druggie.

Kabeer, those mortals who consume marijuana (intoxicants for pleasure), fish (meat) and wine (alcohol), no matter what pilgrimages, fasts and rituals they follow they will go to hell.

Intoxicating substances are causing a lot of problems worldwide; they lead o family break ups, homeless-ness and a lot of crime.

What is Daswandh?

Daswandh: Giving to Charity; One-tenth of your earnings!

"That Sikh obtains much honour in the world,
who earns by the sweat of their brow, and from that,
gives one-tenth to the Guru."
- Bhai Desa Singh- Sikh code of conduct

Charity shows compassionate and kind behaviour, a person of God loves God’s creation and has a duty to help the weak and needy. Caring for others is an essential part of sikhi. Helping the ill; disabled and general humanity has been imparted into Sikh ethics from all of the Sikh Gurus. Sikhs are instructed to give a minimum of 1/10 of their earnings to a charitable cause. This instruction is of a great importance for Sikhs and is even stated in the Sikh code of conduct. Sikhs in the times of the Guru’s used to bring their incomes to Guru Ji; which in turn helped in the Langar (free community kitchen). In the times of Guru Hargobind Ji; Sikhs used to bring arms and horses which helped in the battles against tyranny. Helping in projects which cause the betterment of society, make up a core part of the Sikhs character. Sikhs have given many sacrifices (fighting just wars) in the past for the betterment of humanity. In this day and age where there is so much suffering; if we can’t give our lives, the least we can do is give money to charities that help others. Love, kindness, compassion and charity are the virtues of the God loving people.

O Nanak, those who lack the Lord's Glance of Grace cherish neither charity nor the Lord's Name.- Ang 15 Sri -Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Let the first be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God.- Ang 141-Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

The self-willed manmukh does not remember the Name of the Lord, does not give in charity, and does not cleanse his consciousness; his body rolls in the dust.- Ang 596- Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

In the dark night myriad stars shine. The houses are lit by lighting the lamps but still the thieves also roam about for the purpose of stealing.

The householders shut the doors of their homes and shops before they go to sleep. The sun with its light dispels the darkness of night.

Likewise the gurmukh making people understand the importance of nam (meditation), dan (charity), and isnan (ablution) sets them free from the bondage (of life and death).

The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the company of holy persons through which animals, ghosts and the fallen ones are salvaged and liberated. Such beneficent persons are dear to the Guru. - Bhai Gurdas ji vaara Pannaa 16

What was operation Shanti?

Indira Gandhi, in her war against the Sikhs, was not satisfied with the result of Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army's attack on the Akal Takhat with battle tanks, mountain guns and helicopter gunships, although more than 5,000 innocent Sikh men, women and children perished in the operation.

A direct descendent of Ganga Dhar Kaul, alias Gangu Brahmin, a cook employed in the household of Guru Gobind Singh, her vendetta against the Sikhs was due to what her grandfather, Motilal Nehru, had told her father Jawaharlal Nehru.

Motilal had justified the action of Gangu Brahmin in betraying Guru Gobind Singh's mother and his two young sons to the Mughals because, in his opinion, Guru Gobind Singh's creation of the Khalsa constituted a direct threat to Brahmanism.

Indira Gandhi had her Gangu-Brahmin ancestry confirmed by reference to family records maintained by Pandits at the Mattan Shrine in the Kashmir Valley and the confirmation firmed her resolve to carry on her war against the Sikhs. Not satisfied with the result of Operation Blue Star, she planned another nefarious operation, on a much larger scale, codenamed Operation Shanti. According to Dr. Sangat Singh, the assassination of Indira Gandhi on 31st October 1984 pre-empted Indira's Operation Shanti all over India by a week.

For the details of Operation Shanti we are indebted to Dr. Sangat Singh for exposing Indira Gandhi's venomous plan to wipe out all the Sikhs from the face of India. Dr. Sangat Singh in his new book entitled, "The Sikhs in History" writes at page 415:

Indira drew a diabolical plan, named Operation Shanti, to carry out a general massacre of the Sikhs, of genocidal proportions, around November 8, when the Sikhs would assemble in various Gurdwaras for Guru Nanak's birthday celebrations. According to the plan, large-scale skirmishes virtually amounting to a war were to take place all along the India-Pakistan borders. And, it was to be given out that the Sikhs had risen in revolt in Punjab and joined hands with Pakistani armed forces which had made considerable advances into the Indian Territory. The Sikhs all over Punjab, especially in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Kapurthala and Jalandhar districts were to be subjected to massive aerial bombardment, apart from being slaughtered by army and para military forces. The Sikhs all over India were to be subjected to mass scale massacre, loot, arson and incendiarism by lumpen elements organized by Youth Congress(I) activists. Elaborate preparations were made by Youth Congress (I) network all over India; they were to await a coded signal to start mayhem.

The plan was discussed with certain army generals who advised Indira against it. They pointed out that Nazis had used gas chambers to finish off the Jews, but had not been able to do so. And, her plan to finish off the Sikhs in one go would only club her name with that of Hitler. But she was unrelenting.

Indira was not receptive. In view of her nefarious Sikh genocidal plan, she paid a sudden visit to Kashmir on October 27, when, however, she got the omen of her imminent death. Back in New Delhi, the following day, records the Prime Minister's Principle Secretary, P.C. Alexander, "she sent for Gen. Vaidya and asked him in my presence about the preparedness of the Indian army in J & K to meet any unexpected outbreak of trouble. General Vaidya assured her that the army was very well prepared for any eventuality and there was no danger of it being taken unaware by the Pakistanis.

Indira wanted to involve Vice President from that very stage, as he was to be the acting President once Operation Shanti was operative, and the inconvenient Zail Singh was bumped off. Significantly, Zia ul Haq stated at Indira's funeral that it was with great difficulty that he had been able to avert a war with India. His then No. 2, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, after demitting the office of President of Pakistan in July 1993, stated that Indira had planned to attack Pakistan but was shot dead some ten days before the D-Day.

The omen of her imminent death weighed on Indira for the rest of her four days of life. That was uppermost in her mind when she spoke of her violent death at the public meeting at Bhubaneshwar on October 29. Later, in the evening, she broached the subject with Orissa Governor, B. N. Pandey, at the dinner table.

The thought lingered on, as she returned to Delhi on October 30 night. But unlike Aurangzeb who was remorseful at the "burden of sin" he was carrying, Indira, not being religious, was unrelenting.

Beant Singh, Sub-Inspector in Indira's security, got the contours of Indira's Sikh-genocidal plan from R. K. Dhawan, Special Assistant to Prime Minister, and decided to act to thwart it. He commissioned Satwant Singh to assist him.

On October 31, 1984, at 9.00 a.m. Beant Singh with his service revolver shot Indira in the abdomen and pumped five bullets. In less than a minute, at his call, Satwant Singh emptied his automatic carbine in Indira's abdomen region. Actually, one bullet in the head would have been sufficient. But abdomen was chosen because, firstly, they had been assured that she would not be wearing her bulletproof jacket, and secondly, they did not want to hurt anyone else, which a shot at her head might have entailed.

Beant Singh had cautioned Satwant Singh to ensure that his friend Dhawan was not hurt in the melee. After shooting Indira, both threw down their weapons and Beant Singh said, "I have done what I had to do. You do what you want to do"
