Sikhs targeted as Aussie celebrations get out of hand

Australia: Sikhs and Asians became victims of teenage racial abuse as the Australia Day celebrations took a violent turn in Sydney.

Riot police were deployed to curb the anger of young people as they allegedly hurled racial abuses at non-white shopkeepers and smashed car windows.

The brawls occurred yesterday afternoon in the Sydney suburb of Manly when nearly 80 drunken teenaged jumped on top of cars and smashed windows as they ran up and down Manly&aposs Corso.

Hundreds of youths draped in” Aussie pride “shouted abusive slogans as they smashed car windows and ran up the famous Corso targeting non-white shopkeepers, The Australian reported.

Yesterday Indians too were ironically celebrating their republican day.

A 18-year-old Asian female in one of the cars was showered with shattered glass, giving her numerous cuts to her arms, the paper said.

A sikh taxi driver was also targeted while an Asian shopkeeper was reportedly assaulted, the report said.

According to police, three cars were damaged, one 16-year-old boy was charged with assaulting police.
