The Sikh Gurdwara is place of worship and must be kept as
pure as possible to keep
respect for the Guru and Sangat. This is why people under the influence of
tobacco and
alcohol are not allowed to enter the Gurdwara. Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s horse even avoided taking Guru Ji near a tobacco field. In the same way if a person has a fag and comes into the Gurdwara the smell from the person will ruin the atmosphere of the Gurdwara. A person under the influence of alcohol normally starts trouble and their breath also smells of alcohol too. Because the Guru
forbade alcohol and tobacco it is great disrespect to enter the Gurdwara with any of these substances concealed on you.
That is why in front of all Gurdwaras you will see a Sign saying:
Any person under the influence or carrying tobacco or any intoxicating substance is not permitted to enter the Gurdwara.
